Merchandise and Vendor Trends from Day 3 – Pay These Vendors a Visit

From art deco vibes and unicorn piggy banks to utility bags perfect for glamping, these key items caught our eye. Here’s the rundown of ASD Market Week Day 3. Let’s do this.

2 ASD Mega Trends To Watch: Indoor cozy, Outdoor chic

1. Self-care

Self-care and the concept of “staying in” is still going strong, especially where skincare and “healing” creams and ointments are concerned. From Korean Beauty and natural balms to hemp-infused salves, it’s all about creating rituals while using natural products.

And speaking of “natural,” shoutout to Himalayan Salt Lamps for being a huge trend at the show! (And creating all kinds of great vibes in the process.)

2. Utility / all-terrain gear meets streetwear

At March’s show there was a big “back to nature” trend, featuring “glam camping” and all kinds of outdoorsy gear. This time around, we noticed a clear “functional meets fashion” influence.

Fanny packs are a super important trend this season (Kendall Jenner has been spotted rocking them), as are satchels. And both were seen at the show.

Welcome to “Gorpcore”, folks: mountain apparel chic styled for the city streets. It’s a thing and it was coined by The Cut this past May.

3. And as a bonus, in the “trendy creature” category, we’re calling it: sharks are the new mermaids. Mythical creatures like dragons and unicorns won’t be disappearing anytime soon (or “jumping the shark” — sorry, had to), but sharks will also make waves as a key merch trend. Let’s call it a Sharknado of sorts….

Expect to see these in stores with consumers rushing out to buy stuff just like this in the coming year:

ASD’s Retail Marketing and Online Selling Seminars (What We Learned on Day 3)

Sourcing 101: Ask the Experts

Moderated by Source Direct at ASD’s very own Courtney Harold, this expert panel taught us the right way to request samples from overseas factories, as well as payments, NDAs, and working with sourcing agents.

“It’s important to first decide on the best sourcing model for you – going direct yourself or working with a sourcing agent.” —Courtney Harold, Source Direct at ASD

Why All Brick and Mortar Stores Should Love – Not Fear Amazon

Cathy Wagner of RETAILMavens explained that Amazon has actually helped to weed out the bad stores – and that 92% of retail transactions still happen in a store (!)

“Brick and Mortar isn’t dead – BAD brick and mortar is.  Amazon has actually left a void in the customer experience that only an offline shop can give – and that presents a huge opportunity.” —Cathy Wagner, RETAILMavens

Targeting Gen Z: You, Me, and Generation Z

98% percent of Generation Z would rather shop and ultimately make their purchases in a brick and mortar store (NRF)! Meghan Brophy gave indie retailers invaluable tips on how to reach them.

Fun Fact: Amazon Prime Day this past July 11, 2017 set a new sales record for the company – the event grew by more than 60% compared to last year. Customers purchased more than 3.5 million toys. Whoa! (Fortune)
